Dwayne Bravo Retired From IPL, Joined CSK as the Bowling Coach

The legendary World Cup Champion and a Champion player in the Indian Premier League Dwayne Bravo has formally announced his retirement from IPL today but will replace L Balaji as bowling coach for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023. L Balaji will take a rest from IPL 2023; instead, he will now work at Super Kings Academy with the upcoming young talent from India.

Dwayne Bravo Retirement Statement

I’m looking forward to this new journey because it’s something I see myself doing after my playing days are fully over. I enjoy working with bowlers and it’s a role I’m excited about. From player to coach, I don’t think I have to adjust much because while I’m playing, I always work with bowlers and try to come up with plans and ideas on how to have that one step ahead of the batsmen. The only difference is I will no longer be standing at mid-on or mid-off. I never thought I would be the leading wicket-taker in the history of IPL. But I’m just happy to be a part of IPL history.

Bravo IPL Teams Since 2008

DJ Bravo has played in the Indian Premier League since the inaugural edition but only missed one season in 2017 when an injury forced him out of the competition.

In 2008, Mumbai Indians first purchased him in the auction and he played for Mumbai for three consecutive seasons. In 2011, Chennai Super Kings bought his services and since then he has been an integral player in CSK’s success over the years.

Bravo played for Lions in 2016 and 2017 when the Chennai Super Kings franchise was suspended by the BCCI for two seasons. In 2018, CSK again retained the services of Champion Champion DJ Bravo.

Stats of Dwayne Bravo in All IPL Seasons

Bravo is the highest wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League and currently holds 183 wickets after 15 seasons in the Indian Premier League. The second best after him is Lasith Malinga who holds the record of taking 15 wickets in all Indian Premier League seasons.

The greatest thing about Bravo was he used to bowl the hardest overs in T20 Cricket which were overs between 17 to 20 and in those periods he took 102 wickets showing his great capability as a true champion bowler of T20 cricket. Bravo’s best bowling figure is 4 for 22 and he gave runs at only 8.38 economy over 161 matches. He also scored 1560 runs in IPL with a strike rate of 129.57 which makes him a true elite in the all-rounder’s category.

Future of Dwayne Bravo as a Player

While he has announced his retirement from the Indian Player League, he will continue to play in Abu Dhabi T10 League for Delhi Bulls as well as International League T20 for MI Emirates which is scheduled to be played from January 2023.

UAE pitches suit Bravo even more due to the slowness of the surfaces and he has vast experience playing many leagues in the UAE.

Purple Caps Winner In the Indian Premier League

Bravo also holds the record of being one of only two players who are able to win the IPL purple cap which is awarded to players with the highest number of wickets in a single season.

2013 IPL: Took 32 Wickets to WIN Purple Cap

2015 IPL: Took 26 Wickets to WIN Purple Cap

In a statement given by Kasi Viswanathan, the CEO of Chennai Super Kings said:

He has been a crucial member of the Super Kings family for more than a decade, and we are excited to continue the association. Bravo’s vast experience will be of immense value to our players and support staff. We are confident that our bowling group will thrive under his guidance
