South Africa vs India, U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 Match Summary
The much-awaited U19 Women’s T20 World Cup has finally begun today with the exciting opening game of Australia vs Bangladesh which saw an upset and now the host nation and team India were all set to play against each other at Willowmoore Park, Benoni.
South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first which looks like a very good batting surface so it was a good decision to bat first and put a good score on the board and test the nerves of Indian batters including the experienced guns like Shafali Verma & Richa Ghosh.
A comprehensive victory for India against hosts South Africa in Benoni ✌️

1st Innings Summary
Team South Africa got a good opening start to launch a big 180 score while batting first. Elandri Janse Van Rensburg & Simone Lourens played the powerplay with good intent and great strike rates which are needed in this T20I format. However, their amazing opening partnership was broken by Sonam Yadav along with a first-ball duck for Oluhle Siyo. Simone Lourens stood firm at one end as she ended up scoring a 61 runs knock off just 44 deliveries with a healthy strike rate of 138.63. Madison Landsman, Karabo Meso & Miane Smit all chipped in and supported Simone to post an innings-end score of 166 runs. Kayla Reyneke was the major disappointment from South Africa series as she wasted too many deliveries and never looked like got going at any point in time, She scored only 11 runs off 26 balls which is very poor for the T20I standards. We can say she is the major difference South Africa couldn’t get to 185 score after such a good start and a wonderful long knock from Lourens.
Stage Set For the Chase
Team India needed 167 runs at a run rate of 8.30 during the course of 20 overs to chase down this par score on a very good batting wicket. Indian U19 Women’s team had big expectations from Shafali Verma as an experienced batter who has good experience playing with the senior team and she set the stage on fire with her blistering aggressive knock and gave India a solid head start in the powerplays. Verma scored 45 runs off just 16 deliveries (9 fours & one six) at a strike rate of 281.25.
Verma’s opening partner Shweta Sehrawat kept the attacking mode on to the South African team and she made sure they chase down this total with ease and improve their Net Run Rate as well in the process. Shweta scored unbeaten 92 runs on just 57 deliveries with 20 boundaries at a strike rate of 161.40 which made her the Player of the Match as well. It truly was a breathtaking knock and the way she build her innings was pretty fascinating to watch as she let Shafali take the attack in the powerplay while she made sure to give her the strike as much as possible through mindful batting. Team India chased down the target in just 16.3 deliveries and with that, they not only got 2 points but a healthy net run rate of +2.003 in the process.
Vice-captain Shweta Sehrawat scored a superb 9️⃣2️⃣* off just 57 deliveries and bagged the Player of the Match Award 🙌🏻#TeamIndia off to a winning start in the #U19T20WorldCup with a 7️⃣-wicket victory against South Africa 👏🏻👏🏻

The first day at the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup helped the chasing teams win the most games as India, Bangladesh, UAE & Sri Lanka all won by chasing targets relatively easily. This trend might change tomorrow so we will have to wait and see.
