Sydney Sixers 2022-23 Squad Preview & Match Schedule

The franchise Sydney Sixers is one of the most consistent and tough opponent to beat in the Big Bash League right from the inaugural edition. Last year, they were the runner-up team after losing the forgetful final against Perth Scorchers. The combination selected in the Sydney Sixers squad 2022-23 is not surprising just like they go about in every year’s draft with more focus on the domestic & international talent of Australia than on overseas players.

Sydney Sixers 2022-23 Team Preview

Since 2015, Greg Shipperd has been the consistent head coach for Sydney Sixers, and the BBL 12 won’t be an exception as he is retained along with assistant coaches yet again which is not surprising considering the wonderful performances Sixers has put up in the last three editions. Moises Henriques has been named as Sydney Sixers 2022-23 captain.

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are not available for the Sixers as they prefer to sit out and do their homework for the much-awaited Australia Tour of India. Starc has been very clear to leave out big T20 money for the test cricket as he believes to give his all to the country first rather than building up his bank balance which is fantastic cricket ethics to see in this modern era.

Complete Squad

Sean Abbott, Jackson Bird, Dan Christian, Ben Dwarshuis, Jack Edwards, Mickey Edwards, Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes, Chris Jordan (England), Hayden Kerr, Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, Izharrulhaq Naveed (Afghanistan), Steve O’Keefe, Kurtis Patterson, Josh Philippe, Jordan Silk, James Vince (England) & Steve Smith (replacement back up).

Test cricketers like Smith & Lyon will be available for the franchise after the South Africa tour and they will play all the games possible afterward before leaving for India on their much-awaited and important world test championship series. Todd Murphy may well also be named in the test squad which is scheduled to leave for India before the end of BBL. The replacements for these fantastic cricketers will be hard to find if they manage to reach the playoffs or the big final of BBL 2022-23.

It is expected that Sean Abbott will play the entire BBL 12 and he won’t be named in the Test squad due to various injury issues which might prove to be the best thing for sixers as he is one player who has delivered great bowling spells at the Big Bash. He has so far played 94 BBL games and taken 125 wickets at an economy of 8.48 along with the 512 runs he scored at a strike rate of 112.04 through his batting.

Steve Smith Sydney Sixers

Smith has been with the Sixers since the inaugural edition of BBL and unfortunately for him due to issues with Cricket Australia he was not allowed to play for Sixers last year even though he was available. But thankfully, issues have now been resolved and Smith will come in as a replacement player once an International star leaves Sixers in early January.

Steve Smith will be available after January 8 when the test match series against South Africa finishes which makes him available to play four regular BBL matches this year before departing to India for an important series as per the world test championship. CA has struck a great deal with him where he would be paid a much great salary as part of the marketing expenses rather than getting the normal $2200 per game as a replacement player.

The match against David Warner’s Thunder on January 21st, 2023 is part of the contract smith has done which will definitely be a house full at the SCG with two superstars of Australia facing each other after so long at the BBL level.

Key Players This Season

Sixers can again produce a consistent performance like the last three seasons of BBL if their spin options do the magic with the ball. They got Todd Murphy, Izharrulhaq Naveed, Steve O’Keefe & Nathan Lyon as spin options and it will be an interesting and difficult decision for the coaches how to squeeze them into the playing XI. In-pace attack options like Sean Abbott & Chris Jordan will also give more depth in their bowing department to restrict opponent teams on totals that they can chase easily.
