WIPL 2023 Team Bids Invited by BCCI

Women’s Cricket is growing rapidly in India and in the world circuit and day by day the viewership demands for Women’s cricket in India are also increasing. BCCI has been looking to launch Women’s IPL for the last 2 years and finally has officially decided to launch WIPL 2023 which will be played in March 2023 before the Men’s IPL starts in April. Ex- BCCI Chairman Sourav Ganguly had confirmed to the media before his term ended that 2023 will be the year to launch WIPL with its full glory and he also said it will be as big as Men’s Indian Premier League. 

Process to Own WIPL Franchise

In a press release issued by BCCI, they asked all the reputed entities in India to make a non-refundable payment of INR 5 lakh (USD 6000 approx.) by January 21 to procure the invitation to tender which will be further analyzed by BCCI governing board to make sure the interested party follows the eligibility criteria and once approved the party can then participate in the bidding process. 

Women’s IPL Dates

To accommodate WIPL in the women’s cricket schedule, BCCI has already made adjustments to the domestic season of Women’s cricket which normally goes on from November to April but now this year it is scheduled to be finished in February so the WIPL can easily take place in March 2023 this year. The tentative dates for WIPL are from 3rd March to 26th of March 2023. 

Base Price of Women’s Team

The official announcement regarding the base price has not been made yet by the BCCI but according to many different reliable sports sources in India, it is expected to be in the range of 400 Crore while the cricket board is expected to get around 1000 Crore from each franchise as revenue. The purse value for the WIPL auction will be in the range of 35 to 40 Crore which will be quite big in the world cricket arena right now and will provide ample opportunities for each team to rope in top cricketing talent in the world.

WIPL Media Rights

It is to take note that BCCI has already announced a tender for media rights a few weeks ago and all interested parties are given a deadline to submit their closed bids by 12th January. As per BCCI insider, more than 10 parties have picked the tender document which means BCCI is going to get richer by getting a huge financial media rights tender to any of the lucrative media partners in India. 

The BCCI source has confirmed below mentioned broadcasting Giants who will be submitting their bids to BCCI to acquire media rights for WIPL which will be available for both TV and digital just like the Men’s Indian Premier League

Teams in WIPL

BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed to the media that there is a huge interest by business giants in India to purchase the franchise rights for WIPL and he also mentioned that franchises who already own teams in Men’s IPL have started to contact BCCI in this regard. Rajasthan Royals are one of the franchises that openly expressed their interest in purchasing a franchise in Women’s IPL as well as Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. The inaugural edition of WIPL will have five or six franchises which will be good enough to the scale of Women’s cricket.
